Facial Fillers

The aging process is slow, relentless, and irreversible. There are many factors that contribute to facial aging. Ultraviolet sun rays damage the collagen and elastic fibers of the skin. Gravity pulls tissues downward. There is loss of subcutaneous fat and in some places resorption of bone. The soft tissues sag and the aging face appears hollow and deflated. In the past 15 years, facial fillers have played an important role in the field of facial rejuvenation. Basically, they are liquids or gels that are injected through a tiny needle beneath the skin to smooth lines and wrinkles or plump-up thinned or hollowed areas. Today, there are numerous fillers to choose from, all of which are geared toward replacing lost volume and stimulating collagen production. Common areas treated with fillers are flattened cheekbones, hollows beneath the eyes, grooves that extend from your nose to your mouth (naso-labial folds), and thinned lips.

After injection, fillers last varying lengths of time. Collagen is used to smooth fine lines around the lips or eyes and lasts about 2 months. Hyaluronic gels such as Restylane, Perlane, or Juvederm are used to soften deeper folds or plump-up lips and lasts 6-12 months. Radiesse consists of calcium microspheres and can last up to a year or more.
